I'm Recognisable As the Girl In Scarlet

posted on 24 January 2012

I have this dress that I adore. I bought it the day after my boyfriend dumped me, and my judgement may have been slightly impaired. Unusually for me, I remember it quite clearly. I was with a friend, and she was treating me gently in case I dissolved into tears again. It caught my eye – it’s scarlet, with a neck down to here and a hem up to there, so it was difficult to miss – and I asked her what she thought and she said carefully that I should try it on if I really liked it. It’s funny, but looking back I can see so clearly how much she disapproved, but at the time I took her words at face value. She must have been shocked, though. I wear calf length skirts in blue and brown and nice floral print. But d’you know the funny thing? I’ve had that dress for years now, and it’s absolutely me, down to the bone. It suits all kinds of events and all kinds of accessories work well with it - from evening bags to scarves. Sometimes you have to switch off your better judgement to find out what really suits you.

Fashion Favorites: My Favorite Pair of Pants

posted on 22 January 2012

Though I love to wear dresses for special occasions - and I have a lovely selection of Yuki dresses at home - it's good old fashion pants that I wear on a day-to-day basis. Pants are a piece of clothing that are so versatile. I personally wear pants almost everywhere I go. My favorite pair of pants are those that has some stretch and make my legs looks skinny, since I feel my legs are too big for my body type. Nowadays I am wearing pants everyday to go to work and for this occasion I try to wear the ones that are a little bit loose in the legs to be more comfortable and to look professional. The length of the pants is very important for me because wearing pants that are too long or too short can really make a big difference in the way you look. This is why I always take my pants to a tailor to make the necessary adjustments needed to make them perfect to fit my body. Not everything you buy in the stores is made for your body type, so it is better to spend a little extra money to make your favorite pants an unique piece.

The Handbag that Truly Changed My Life

posted on 13 December 2011

While shopping at a thrift store I found a very different type of handbag - not the gold clutch bags I browse (I have a particular thing for these bags!). It intrigued me and it was half price that day. Little did I know that the purchase that day would change my purse habits and send me on a several month search. There is no perfect handbag, the closest it comes (till now) was the Ameri Bag, plenty of room, lots of pockets, the perfect purse for one who likes to be organized, or so I thought. The thrift store bag was a Bueno brand, never heard of it before but instantly fell in love. The bag is large yet compact, has pockets all over the outside and some inside. 3 sections, two large enough to fit my Bible in for Sunday church. Impressive! The shoulder straps were just the right length and they actually stayed on my shoulder and yet this bag was so perfect that I could also stick in next to me in the car , on the drivers side next to the window. I was thrilled to find such a bag...but woe...as quickly as it came into my life it left. Seems the outside covering had dried and was now cracking and peeling, I couldn't live with out this new found love so I rushed to the computer and clicked on Ebay....I searched and searched and then WAIT is this possible????? There was a posting for the same purse in purple (my favorite color) and it was available as a buy it now!!! I clicked, it shipped, we were one again. But wait what if this one should break????? More heartache? More hunts?? Back to Ebay where I also found a black one and then a beige one. Sitting back very proud of myself that I know had 3 of these great purses and all at a really low price. So happy was I that I gave my two Ameri Bags to a lady at church. I have finally found that perfect handbag and yes if I see one at a rummage or the thrift store or perhaps if I am on Ebay I may just buy another (if the price is right). My quest is over and I am content! And this is not fictional, as I type this I gaze upon my purple Bueno with fondness, what a joy to have THE PERFECT HANDBAG!!!!!

Beige: the New White When It Comes to Pashminas for Weddings

posted on 27 June 2011

For years I would never go anywhere without my white pashmina. I was even worried for a time that people might think it was a kind of childish safety blankey because I rarely went out without it. They worked well at formal occasions like weddings too, as pashminas for weddings really need to be very light in colour. It must have been one of the best traveled pashminas around. My only complaint was that white shows up dirt and stains to a higher degree than other colors, and even a small mark would scream out its presence from the material. With the miles this accessory was putting in, I was having to wash it frequently just to keep it looking presentable. My daughter suggested black would be a better color and save me the laundry bills but I have always preferred lighter colors. A dark color around my neck and shoulders has never been my thing. Out to lunch with a friend one day (accompanied by slightly dirty pashmina of course) I spyed a lady with a beige pashmina, and I knew my problems were solved. Light enough to fit in easily with my wardrobe where my white one had previous fitted, and off color enough to disguise any accidental mark, it was such an obvious solution that I can't believe that I hadn't been wrapped in beige since Day 1.

My Birkin Look-a-like Bag for Every Occasion

posted on 22 June 2011

My favorite bag is definitely red Carpisa purse that I have purchased about year and a half ago. It looks very much like Hermès Birkin bag, its color, size and shape are very similar. When you look at it, it is obvious that it is not Birkin copy, but very beautiful and quality bag of similar style. I could never afford a real Birkin, and also I would never wear a knockoff, so this is just the perfect option for me. Because of its red color I have noticed that it can boost my energy, it always make me feel fashionable and hip. But the best thing is that it goes perfectly with any of my clothing combination and that I can wear it to any occasion. It's not like with evening bags or other specific-occasion bags where you're limited to when and where you can bring it. I have worn it to my work and on the girl’s night out, it went with me in supermarket and on rock concerts. And I always look great and had an amazing time.

I'm Not Afraid of Country Kitsch!

posted on 16 May 2011

I am a huge lover of vintage fashion two out of the three clothing shops I visit once a week are vintage retailers. There are a lot of reasons I am attracted to the old-school aesthetic, but the biggest draw is probably the wider availability of flamboyant looks. Don’t get me wrong – everything must be done in moderation, and I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing both a ruffled shirt and a pair of lace-fly pants – but every girl needs at least one over the top item in her wardrobe, and I found my perfect absurdist piece in a country-inspired blouse. It’s cut from a checkered, schoolhouse-red fabric, and has plenty of ruffles. The ruffles start at the high collar and continue down to where my ribs end, which is exactly where you want them to finish if you’re planning to wear a high-waist pencil skirt. Ruffles aren’t just for the collar, though – the tight cuffs are also accented with light ruffles. Off-white lace adds the perfect contrast color at the edge of the sleeves, the collar, and ach of the ruffles. Matched with a sexy pencil skirt, a pair of flirty pumps, and a heavy pendant peeking through above the third button, and I find such attire goes well with my Cosy Feet shoes too. My favorite vintage find always makes me feel like I’m wearing something fun and interesting when I head to work in the morning.

Pearl jewelry and momme weight

posted on 14 May 2011

Pearls, and the pearl jewelry that uses those pearls, such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, are weighed using a very old, Japanese measurement. The weight measurement is referred to as momme weight. It is the preferred way for dealers and wholesalers to measure weight for both loose pearls and for strands of pearls. As the long time standard in the pearl industry, momme weight is easily understood among all pearl dealers. One momme is equal to one one-thousandth of a kan, which is another traditional Japanese measurement which equals, roughly, 3.75 kilograms. This is approximately equal to 8.28 pounds. That makes one momme equal to 3.75 grams. It quickly became a worldwide standard through Japanese trade for goods such as pearl jewelry and silks. Pearl jewelry that uses momme weight can easily be categorized and sorted for size and purity. Along with size of the pearl, momme weight helps determine the value of pearl jewelry.

Imaginations Soar When Playing With Tinker Toys

posted on 2 May 2011

Kids these days seem so sophisticated and adult-like - with their fashion ranges (from Angels Face clothing to I Love Gorgeous) and computer games. Although I had less sophisticated toys and fashion, I have fond memories of my childhood. When I was very small, I remember going to my grandma’s house to visit. Grandma lived in an upstairs apartment that always seemed cozy and warm. We knew we would be treated to special cookies and love, but one of the best things was the corner closet that held all of the toys just waiting for us to come and play! Oh, the anticipation of getting the greetings out of the way and getting to that closet! One of the favorites of mine was Tinker Toys. The long, narrow tube held every length of slender sticks and colorful round circles just waiting for assembling into whatever our imaginations could create. No simple opening of that box – no, we would dump them out in a hurry and get to building whatever came into our minds. We competed for the tallest towers, the wildest designs or simply used them as creation equipment for other toys we played with. They could become a house for our dolls, or roads for the Matchbox cars. Visits to Grandma’s house could always be looked forward to letting our imaginations soar with Tinker Toys.

Following the Yellow Brick Road to Dave's Wedding

posted on 30 April 2011

Amy and Dave were a funny pair and seemed quite mismatched. Amy looked like a blonde and busty centrefold model while Dave had a large belly, scruffy clothes and worked as a builder. However they seemed very happy together and I was always secretly jealous of him having his gorgeous girlfriend. When I got a wedding invite I couldn't help but be curious as to how the day might be, would it be full of other glamourous girls or would Amy be the one shining jewel? Would she look resplendent in one of those amazing wedding tiaras while Dave's next to her in a string vest and a pair of shorts? Well, in the event everyone did stand out because they made it a theme wedding. He went as scarecrow and she as dorothy in a strange wizard of oz type theme. All the guests were munchkins with bright green wigs. And the best looking friends had to wear outfits that depicted them as munchkin children, with giant lollipops and pompom hats. That certainly took their sexy edge away from them for a change. She'd definitely ensured that she was by far the most glamourous, but what a cunning way to do it!

Black Snakeskin Pumps: For Every Woman, Everyday

posted on 10 April 2011

Little black shoes are my personal version of the little black dress: that one fabulous item that belongs in every woman's closet, the go-to piece that goes with anything and can be worn for any occasion - from gladiator sandals to gold high heels. Just as every woman has her favorite little black dress, I have my favorite little black shoes. Trial and error have taught me that nothing looks better on my feet than a pair of Mary Jane style black snakeskin heels. The narrow high heel (three to four inches, usually) makes me appear long and slim, the ankle strap holds my foot securely in place, and the snakeskin texture adds just the right touch of visual interest and sex appeal. I can wear a pair of black snakeskin heels with anything, from jeans to pants to skirts to dresses, and a pair that fits beautifully and is comfortable can take me from day to night. Whatever I'm doing and whatever I'm wearing, a black snakeskin pump always makes me look and feel my best!

A Woman Really Cannot Have Too Many Pairs of Boots

posted on 16 February 2011

Bottom line, a woman really cannot have too many pairs of ladies boots. I love the fall and winter. One of the main reasons for this is the ability to wear different types of boots. There are three main types of boots to wear. The first is some version of a practical snow boot. This snow boot need not be ugly. A snow boot that has some style, some suede or fuzzy liners are great boots to wear when it is cold and snowy outside. The second type of boot is the cowboy boot. Cowboy boots can be very stylish and are great fall wear. There are short, tall, inlaid, plain and all types of cowboy boots, all of which have some attitude. The third type of boot is the fashion boot. A multiple assortment with a minimum of brown and black boots are necessary to make it through the fall and winter months. These boots can be short, calf length, knee high, over the knee and thigh high. They can be high heeled, flat, medium and all different heights in between. Styles abound with fashion boots so a woman is free to express her personality with them. Boots are just fun to have and fun to wear.

Scarves Can Be Used For That Glamour Look

Scarves are in fashion now and lots of women use it today to accessorize their clothing such as dressy blouses. It can just be thrown on the shoulder by wearing a top and jeans. It accentuates the style .Scarves are available in all colors and in different types of materials. Silk ones look good for parties and get-togethers. Woolen scarves are best worn in winter. It serves the purpose of style as well as to protect from the winter cold. Scarves also protect against the scorching heat of summer. Sometimes it is used just to tie the hair loosely and the ends of the scarves are flowing. Sunglasses can be worn along with this to complement the look. On My Jitters Before The Big Marriage Day

posted on 23 August 2010

With flowers everywhere and people around wishing you “Happy honeymoon” with a completely stranger sitting beside me made the event feel so surreal. I remembered the movie” Runaway Bride” and its scenes played through my head on my wedding day. Sleeping in the other room was the first day of my honeymoon. I feel a bit embarrassed to reveal that and at the same time I feel there may be thousands of people with the same experience as me (mine was an arranged marriage). Right from the moment engagement rings were chosen by my parents, everything was out of my hands. However, as the days have passed, things have become much better - he's a very nice guy, but I wish I could have known that before we married! He is a very understanding as well as caring guy with whom I can rely one. But according to my experience, do not go blindly as few people are meant to be lucky. Life is like an open road where you have to make decision by your own free will. So whenever you make it, choose it wisely.
