Men and women who have been hurt on the job did not wake up “the morning of” and know they were going to get hurt. Most men and women in the work force go to their jobs every single day not thinking about safety in the work place. This is how accidents and injuries happen while on the clock. Please know that you don’t have to be a high line worker or a high rise welder in order to sustain and injury while on the job. Your employer has the responsibility to recognize and address every hazard that accompanies your duties to provide you a safe working environment.
ERGONOMICS: According the U. S. Department of Labor and Occupational Health and Safety, “Ergonomics is the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of the working population.” Simply put the movements and motions that you make every day and all day while at work affect you physically. Repetitive motion, static posture and noise are three major contributors to determining the efficiency of ergonomics in the work place. There are safe guards that can be used to offset the effects of these contributors. Frequent breaks away from your work station to stretch your muscles is one.
Muscles need to be exercised and holding your posture in one position for long periods of time causes static stress on your body. So, if you sit most of your work day and if circumstances allow it, try standing for periods of time to relieve the static stress on your body. Move things around on your desk so that you have to change your motion in order to complete a task. Whether you have a physically demanding job or you spend most of your time in one position, changing the way you do things at your work station will relieve aches and pains caused by static stress. The outcome will be less wwork accident claims and a healthier you.
